Laptop keyboard and touchpad freeze at irregular but frequent intervals.  Using a wireless mouse frees up the cursor but not the keyboard.  I get it back by briefly touching the on/off button.  system shuts down and is reactivated by pressing the space bar.  Laptop comes to life and all working again. exactly back where it froze so not work is lost. No particular keystroke causes the problem.  It is random and can happen every few minutes or go for longer periods.  Running system tests etc shows no issues.  It is becoming a nuisance on a laptop only 3 years old.  Any ideas please,

Hi @DRDT,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact model of your HP laptop.
  • Which version of Windows you’re currently running.
  • If the freezes occur only when the laptop is on battery power, or also when plugged in.

In the meantime, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Update drivers and BIOS
    • Visit HP Support Assistant or the HP Drivers & Downloads page and ensure your touchpad, keyboard, and BIOS are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause intermittent freezes.
  2. Check for Windows updates
    • Go to Settings > Windows Update and install any pending updates.
  3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)
    • Restart your laptop, press Esc repeatedly, then press F2 to access diagnostics. Run the extended test for keyboard and touchpad to rule out hardware issues.
  4. Disable Fast Startup
    • Sometimes Fast Startup interferes with input devices. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and uncheck “Turn on fast startup.”
  5. Test in Safe Mode
    • Boot into Safe Mode and check if the issue persists. If it doesn’t, a third-party application or driver may be causing the freeze.
  6. External keyboard test
  • Try connecting a USB keyboard. If that works consistently, it helps us determine whether the issue is hardware-related to the built-in keyboard/touchpad.

I hope this helps.
