Hi @WFUREY,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how  it must feel when your laptop keyboard isn’t responding, especially if it’s preventing you from completing startup.

Could you please share the exact HP laptop model you’re using? Also, let me know if the keyboard stopped working suddenly or if there were any recent updates or changes before this issue began.

Here are a few quick  steps you can try right away:

  1. External keyboard test: Connect a USB or wireless keyboard to check if the issue is limited to the built-in keyboard.
  2. Hard reset: Power off the laptop, disconnect the charger, and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds. Then reconnect and try starting up again.
  3. BIOS check: Restart the laptop and press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS. If the keyboard works there, the issue may be software-related.
  4. Safe mode startup: If possible, try booting into Safe Mode to see if the keyboard responds.
  5. Driver update: Once you’re able to log in, check Device Manager for keyboard drivers and update or reinstall them.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
