I have a friend with an Envy Laptop PC 17-cr0000 RCTO and it’s about 2 ½ years old. The laptop does not seem to be starting up. When she turns it on, the following occurs:

  1. Power light comes on
  2. Brief sound of disk starting up for 1-2 seconds
  3. A few more seconds of silence
  4. Then the fan starts racing and it just stays like that indefinitely.

No flicker of anything appears on the display. No other startup sounds of any kind. Just a blank screen and endless fan noise.

She unplugged it when she went on vacation for a week, and when she came back, she plugged it in again, turned it on and started having this problem. Any ideas what the cause could be and how to fix? If any other information is needed, I will be happy to supply it. Thank you in advance.

Hi @GTifeld,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your friend's HP Envy Laptop is experiencing a startup issue. Here are some steps you can try to diagnose and potentially resolve the problem.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect any external devices and remove the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter (but leave external devices disconnected) and try to start the laptop.

Check for Display Issues:

  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor using an HDMI or VGA cable. This will help determine if the laptop's display is functional.
  • If the external display works, the issue might be with the laptop's screen or display cable.

Power Cycle the Laptop:

  • Remove the battery (if it is user-removable) and then reinsert it.
  • Try starting the laptop again.

Perform a BIOS Recovery:

  • Press the power button, and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly.
  • Select the BIOS Recovery option if available.

Check the RAM:

  • If you're comfortable doing so, reseat the RAM. Remove the bottom cover, remove the RAM sticks, and then reseat them carefully.
  • Ensure the RAM is properly seated and clipped back into place.

Boot in Safe Mode:

  • If any display flickers appear or you can access the BIOS, attempt to boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 or the relevant key for Safe Mode on HP laptops.

Listen for Beep Codes:

  • Some startup issues are indicated by beep codes. If any beep patterns are heard, note them as they can help diagnose the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
