Thanks so much Gurs. This worked on my HP Pavilion 11-n034tu x360 laptop. So just to clarify exactly what I did. Firstly the issue arose after updating the BIOS when everything seemed to go fine except at the last step it didn't reboot - the screen was completely blank not even the backlight was on. I tried all of the key combinations on boot and nothing did anything. I opened it up and disconnected the battery and CMOS battery and then plugged it in to the charger and booted it while holding windows+v keys and then it started up after a few screen flashes. powered it back down, plugged the batteries back in and put it back together and now boots like normal.
