My laptop won't boot. I've tried all of the possible solutions I've read [power on without battery; hold power button 20 seconds; Windows key + B + power; press escape button repeatedly while powering up], without success. Occasionally there are several [3 if I saw correctly] series of 5 blinking white caps lock lights, but most of the time no blinking LEDs. I can hear the fan running. After several minutes there is a series of 3 tones, but the screen remains black. One or both hinges are now binding. I don't know if the 2 issues are related. The laptop was slow to boot before the hinge issue started. Any help appreciated.

First of all, I'm pretty sure your laptop is NOT running Windows 11 -- so providing us misleading information is not helping the situation.
Second, you need to provide the specific model number if you want detailed help.
Third, Software failures will generate on-screen messages, usually about not finding an Operating System or not being able to boot. When the screen is blank, the PC is experiencing a major hardware failure.
--------------------
If the CapsLock key is blinking or there is beeping, read this HP information on the likely cause of the hardware failure based on the blinking or beeping patters.
For laptops, this HP thread describes the different blink and beep codes: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674?jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0001
--------------------
To determine the cause with hardware failures, you have to be able run diagnostics. We have no way of accessing your PC from here, so we can not do that for you. You have to do it yourself.
You do this by pressing the Esc key repeatedly when rebooting and then, when the HP Startup Menu appears, selecting Diagnostics (usually F2) and letting it run.
If it is NOT possible to run diagnostics, or if that does not work, then there is NOTHING more you can do by yourself -- and there is NOTHING we can do because we have no way of accessing your PC from here to run diagnostics or repair hardware.
You will need to have the PC physically examined in a service facility by folks that can run their own diagnostics to determine what is wrong with it.
--------------------
If your PC is still under the original one-year HP warranty, or if you have purchased an extended warranty from HP and this is still valid, then having HP do this is an inexpensive option for you. In that case, you should contact HP Customer Support to see about having it repaired or replaced under warranty.
To contact HP Support see the following link to create yourself a case number:
Step 1. Here is the link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Case number and contact information appears.
--------------------
If your PC is no longer under warranty, then it will cost you up front to have HP examine your PC. If you want to do that, you will have to contact an HP Repair or Service Center to see if they can examine the PC to determine the cause(s) of the problems, if it can be repaired, and an estimate of the repair costs.
Since you live in the U.S., here is a link to the HP Service Repair Centers:
https://www.service-center-locator.com/hp-hewlett-packard/hp-hewlett-packard-service-center.htm
If that link does not get you a useful page, then use the main HP link:
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html
If you can't get assistance from HP, then you will have to seek out a local laptop service facility to have them examine it for you.
Good Luck

It absolutely IS running Windows 11. What makes you so sure it's NOT? Your smart crack was not helpful.
I already provided the model number. It's in the original post.
I had already read the article on codes and don't understand where mine fits in. There were 5 white blinks, repeated twice. But there were blinking LEDs only during a couple of boot attempts. Most of the time there are no blinking LEDs.
As stated, when I powered on and repeatedly hit the esc button, nothing happened.

Yeah, you are right, I SHOULD have checked the model number -- but then, EVERYONE here now is claiming Windows 11, even on 5-year-old PCs, probably because it's the first OS in the list.
The list of blink/beep codes is arranged in sections, the single codes are down near the bottom -- but that list is for the really OLD PCs, and yours is not one of them.
So, you need to use the HP link to create a support case and contact HP Tech Support to get assistance on your PC. We have no way of accessing it, so we can hot help in that.
