About a week ago I was having issues with my Laptop's battery power. It eventually got to the point where it wouldn't last 3 minutes without the charger plugged in. It reached the point where the moment I disconnected the charger from a power outlet, the laptop would die instantly. Then, it just wouldn't turn on, period, even while plugged in. I ordered a new battery and charged that to full power, but the laptop still didn't turn on. I tried the standard procedure of holding down the power button while it wasn't charging for a minute, and that didn't work. I know the charger isn't broken because there was an orange light that turned on when I plugged it in, and then it turned to a white light when the battery was fully charged. I'm stumped as to what to do next.

So if you remove the battery and just plug in the AC adapter will it turn on?

HP Recommended

No, there is no response with or without the AC adapter. The only feedback I get is the light that turns on when the AC adapter is plugged in.

You have all the earmarks of a dead motherboard I am sorry to say

Is there steps I can take to work around this or am I supposed to just replace it?

There is no workaround for a dead motherboard. When people find out how much they cost they usually just buy a new laptop. It might make financial sense if you can replace it yourself.

When I replaced the battery, the laptop booted up, but I had to leave for a hour or two and figured it would just “go to sleep” till I got back to look at it.  But it will not turn on anymore, although the little white charging light blinks every time I press the “on” button.  Is this what would happen if the motherboard was dead?

HP Recommended

No it actually sounds more like a dead AC adapter or power jack. If the motherboard were bad it could not boot up under any circumstances.

So you think the AC adapter or power cord died after it booted up the laptop after I put the new battery in?

No I think whatever is bad has always been bad. The battery provided power until it ran down. Now it is out of juice and if the AC adapter is no good or the power jack is no good then it will not start.
