Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with my HP laptop. It won’t turn on at all — the screen stays completely black and there’s no sign of activity. The only thing I notice is that the white battery indicator light is on, but the laptop doesn’t respond in any way, no matter what I try (pressing the power button, holding it down, trying different outlets, etc.).

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

@Giulia44, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query!
I understand how frustrating it can be when your laptop won’t power on. Since you mentioned that the white battery indicator light is on, but the laptop shows no other signs of life, here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

Perform a Hard Reset

This helps drain residual electrical charge and can often resolve power issues.

For laptops with a removable battery:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Unplug the AC adapter.
  3. Remove the battery.
  4. Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds.
  5. Reinsert the battery and plug in the AC adapter.
  6. Try turning on the laptop.

For laptops with a non-removable battery:

  1. Turn off the laptop and unplug the AC adapter.
  2. Press and hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds.
  3. Plug the AC adapter back in and try powering on.

Check the Power Adapter and Port

  • Ensure the power adapter is working. If possible, test with another compatible HP charger.
  • Inspect the charging port for any dust or damage.

Try a BIOS Recovery

If the laptop is not booting but the power light is on, a BIOS recovery might help.

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Press and hold the Windows + B keys, then press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  3. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B until you hear beeping sounds or see the screen light up.
  4. Follow on-screen instructions if the BIOS recovery screen appears.

Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

If the laptop powers on but doesn’t boot, you can run diagnostics:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press the Power button, then immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  • Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics and run the System Test.

If none of the above steps help, the issue might be hardware-related, in that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
