HP Laptop 15-dw0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I want to start my laptop automatically to take advantage of auto updates during my unlimited data window. My desktop does it fine but I don't know how to set up my new laptop to do the same thing. How do I schedule auto start and shutdown? Thanks for the help.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

  1. In Windows Update, click Change settings. ...
  2. Click the drop-down menu underneath Important Updates, and then select your desired setting.
  3. Check the box next to Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates. ...
  4. Click Ok to save your setting.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for the reply. What I'm trying to do is turn the computer on at 3:00 am and off at 6:00 am to let windows downloads happen during my non-metered "free zone." I have my other computers doing it by having the BIOS start it and Windows task manager shutting it down. my problem has become I can't change my BIOS start time.

Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics and run the Extensive Test.

  1. In Windows, search for and open the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows app.

If this app is not on your computer, download the latest version from the HP Hardware Diagnostics website.

  2. On the main menu, click System Tests.

  3. Click the System Extensive Test tab.

  4. Click Run once.

While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component display on the screen. The test can take 2 or more hours to complete.

  5. If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in Test Logs on the main menu.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

The tests were all successful but I still don't know how to automatically start the computer at 3:00 am.

Let's create a new power plan and check:

  • Note: under the turn of display settings and put the computer to sleep choose none.
  1. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

  2. Search for power, and then click Power Options.

Opening the Power Options in Windows

  3. Select an option under Choose or customize a power plan.

    Selecting a power plan

  4. To customize the selected plan, click Change plan settings, and then select the display and sleep settings when using the battery and when plugged in.

NOTE: To set up a personalized plan, click Create a power plan from list on the left side of the main Power Options window, and then follow the on-screen instructions. The plan displays in the list of available power plans.
  5. To change more power settings, click Change advanced power settings.

Change advanced power settings for more options

  6. Click the plus sign next to the component or function, change the available settings, click Apply, and then click OK.

    Changing the Advanced settings

  7. Click Save changes

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
