Laptop appears to start, gives HP startup screen, then when I expect it to boot to password screen screen stays black but for a small WiFi icon flashing for about a second every six seconds or so. Fan is working and small led indicator on right hand side is flickering (hard-drive working?). Have tried hard reboot, removing battery and redoing BIOS as per support video. Have not yet tried taking out the memory modules, but will try that next. Any further assistance would be valuable before I get out my screwdriver, please? Unsure which W8 OS Version I have. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for posting back.
While initiating system factory reset, you will get the options to backup data. If you chose to Keep my files, on the next screen the system will display a list of conventional programs installed on your computer This list will be saved to your desktop when you finish the recovery process.

-
Select Back up your files first (recommended), and then click Next.
-
Select the method you want to use to choose files to back up:
-
If you want to identify the categories of files to back up, select Auto Selection. This option allows you to select the file type to back up instead of selecting the individual files to back up. For example, you can choose to back up all picture files, all document files, and all video files.
or If you want to select individual files to back up, select User Selection, and then click Next.

-
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Welcome to HP Forums,
This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂
I see that the computer is not booting up after windows password screen, I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
- What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c0375482 (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
- When was the last time it worked fine?
- What is the operating system?
While you respond to that, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
Use the following steps if your computer stops at a black screen with a blinking cursor after entering the Windows password. Click Here

Thanks for the repkly @Echo_Lake .
My HP notebook has product number N2K52EA#ABU. When it gets that far, it runs Windows 8, but I'm not even getting that. After the initial HP start screen, with a blue HP roundel top middle third of screen and a smaller series of animated rotating dots in the bottom middle third, my screen goes black but for a small (5mm) 5 bar-graph WiFi symbol which flashes for approximately 1 second every 6 seconds. I've reseated the memory module this afternoon, and other than a blue screen and a 'please wait' message, nothing else has changed. I don't get as far as the windows sign in screen. Not sure if windows is being recognised on it.
My PC last was being used a week ago (Sunday afternoon).

Thank you for posting back.
This sounds like windows operating system related issue, performing system factory reset might fix the issue.
Note: Back up all personal files and read all caution statements before performing a system recovery

Thanks for the advice @Echo_Lake. I think you're right. If windows isn't loading up I think it will need a reset, but I don't know how i can access/rescue my personal files if windows is not running.. is there a way if doing it using DOS? Or plugging some sort of USB device directly into the pc?
