Laptop 16-ag0052wm (9J545UA) Can't boot to Windows or BIOS screen.

Fans start on power button but run only a few seconds...maybe 5 sec then quit, black screen. Error code: Caps Lock blink, 5 long followed by 3 short. Don't know if I have the HP Sure Start feature. Used the HP support videos to complete all tasks. Note: none of the following worked...what next?

  1. Performed hard reset, power off, disconnect power (battery integral), power button on 30 sec, connect pwr, press pwr button.
  2. Power on, press F10 multiple times for 30 sec. Black screen
  3. Power on, press ESC multiple times for 30 sec. Black screen
  4. Reset the CMOS, hold down Windows + v key, press power key 2.1 sec holding WIN + v release power key for 1 minute (power light remained on), no CMOS message.
  5. Manually recover BIOS, hold down Windows + b key, press power key 2.1 sec holding WIN + b release power key for 1 minute (power light remained on), no beeps or BIOS message or other msg.
  6. Manually recover BIOS, hold down Windows + v key, press power key 2.1 sec holding WIN + v release power key for 1 minute (power light remained on), no beeps or BIOS message or other msg.
  7. BIOS using a USB recovery drive, downloaded the same or one revision newer BIOS, though not the latest BIOS (don't know the original BIOS rev.) Same instructions as BIOS recovery, see #5 & 6) Note: when pressing the power button the usb drive did blink, that was it. Tried both Windows + b key and Windows + v key, no beeps or BIOS message or other msg.

What next?

@Bevpen, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The Caps Lock blink code of 5 long and 3 short blinks on your HP 16-ag0052wm (9J545UA) laptop indicates a general system board failure. This is a serious hardware-level issue that prevents the system from booting into BIOS or Windows.

You've already done an excellent job trying all the recommended recovery steps, including:

  • Hard reset
  • BIOS recovery via key combinations (Win + B / Win + V)
  • USB BIOS recovery
  • CMOS reset

Since none of these worked and the blink code persists, we suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United States | HP® Support
(Select the country from the dropdown menu and enter the city name or pincode)

Additional Notes

  • HP Sure Start is typically available on business-class HP laptops (EliteBook, ProBook). The 16-ag0052wm is a consumer model and likely does not include Sure Start.
  • The USB BIOS recovery blinking indicates the system is attempting to read the drive, but the failure prevents it from completing the recovery.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Max3Aj,  I appreciate the response. Not what I was hoping for but the reality. Too bad it didn't happen two months ago before the warranty ran out! Will be dropping it at Micro Center...they always do good work and reasonable prices, too!
