Hi @radicalunicorn,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The blinking caps lock LED pattern on an HP laptop often indicates a hardware issue, specifically related to the system board or the graphics subsystem. The specific pattern you mentioned (5 slow blinks, 3 fast blinks) may vary depending on the laptop model, but it typically signifies a problem with the system board.

Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the laptop from the power source.
  • Remove the battery, if it's removable.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery (if applicable) and power source, then try turning on the laptop.

Check Memory (RAM):

  • If you have multiple RAM modules, try removing one at a time and see if the issue persists.
  • Re-seat the RAM modules in their slots to ensure they are properly connected.

Check for External Devices:

  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, external hard drives, printers, etc.) and try starting the laptop.

External Display:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor and see if there is any display. This can help determine if the issue is related to the laptop screen.

Perform a BIOS Recovery:

  • If your laptop has a removable battery, ensure it is disconnected.
  • Press and hold the Windows key + B, then press the power button. Keep holding the Windows key + B until the BIOS update screen appears or until you hear beeping sounds.
  • Follow any on-screen instructions to complete the BIOS recovery.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
