Thanks for that link. I searched the part  number for the mother board (929481-601) and unfortunately there is no buy link, so I it looks like it is no longer available to buy which at least answers that question.

Its looking unfortunately like 450GBP gone down the drain all because an attempt was made to replace the hard disk with an SSD drive. Ordinarily this is a straightforward procedure. Difficult to know whether this was an incompatibility or some other issue. If it was some cheap SSD drive then I might have suspected the SSD, but this was a Samsung EVO, normally very reputable and reliable. Very weird to have this happen.

One last question, if I may? I have read somewhere that the "newer" HP laptops do not have a BIOS battery. I don't see one mentioned in the manual, so presumably BIOS is powered from the main battery? If that is the case, then how long does the battery need to be removed for before the BIOS clears? I have read various opinions on this ranging form a few seconds to days....

I don't know the answer but I can tell you that unlike with desktops, folks have tried to remove the CMOS battery or jumper it  to reset BIOS passwords only to find out they wasted their time.

The BIOS password is another matter entirely and not the issue in this instance as there was no password assigned. Of course, you have no way of verifying that, so I understand where you are coming from. However, in that case I would still expect the system to boot and prompt for a BIOS password. In like manner, one can't get around encrypted volumes that way either. All I can say is, that on this laptop, I have never been prompted for a password on boot-up. It previously just booted into the OS.

You're correct in that the Samsung SSD should simply have worked -- without any issues.  I am using those in two PCs and I had no problems cloning to them or then rebooting from them.

Sorry, don't have anything else to offer.
