Pavilion x360 14-ba108ur
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop power is turned off. I connect it to AC power, external monitor, keyboard and mouse. Then I press Power button (it's on its side). I expect that it would turn on, since AC is connected. But it doesn't turn on until I open the lid.

So each time I have to open the lid, power on and wait until Windows boots. After that I can close the lid (Windows is set up to "Do nothing" when on AC power).

It is really annoying. What can I do?

Hi! @Arepo,

Thanks for writing back to us.

It is not a hardware limitation. But this is how the PC's are designed. You cannot power on the laptop when it is completely shut down and when the lid is closed.

Unless you have connected the laptop to a docking station and then you power on the PC from the docking station.

Hope this answers your query!

Take Care! 🙂

Hey there! @Arepo,

Is the laptop connected to a docking station?

Do you see any blinking lights on the caps lock or num lock key on the PC?

You cannot power on the laptop when the laptop lid is closed or when it shut down completely. It is windows feature not a laptop feature.

However, you can try updating the BIOS and chipset drivers on the PC to the latest version and check if it helps.

Update the BIOS using this link. Click Here

Update the chipset drivers using this link. Click Here

Also, try the steps recommended below.

Run the Windows Power Management troubleshooter.

Type troubleshooting in the Windows search box and press Enter.
Select Troubleshooting (control panel) from the list of search results.
Click System and Security.
Click Power.
Click Next to run the power management troubleshooter.
Click Close when the troubleshooter completes.
Restart your computer.

To resolve this issue for, follow these steps:

Open device manager and select Keyboard from the list.
Right click on HID keyboard device and click Properties.
Click the Hardware tab, and then click Properties.

> Is the laptop connected to a docking station?

No, it's connected to power adapter, external mouse, keyboard and monitor via its ports.

Do you see any blinking lights on the caps lock or num lock key on the PC?

Irrelevant. Caps lock and num lock keys are not seen when the lid is closed.

You cannot power on the laptop when the laptop lid is closed or when it shut down completely.

Why? Is it hardware limitation?

However, you can try updating the BIOS and chipset drivers on the PC to the latest version and check if it helps.

Chipset drivers are irrelevant, because they aren't loaded until PC is turned on. As for BIOS, I don't know. I'll check if there's update.

Click the Power Management tab, and then verify that the Allow this device to wake the computer is enabled.
There's no problems with waking my PC when it is in sleep mode.
