HP Pavilion 14-v046tx
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hi i have a HP Pavilion 14-v046tx which frequently freezes everytime i try to start it. It will freeze at the HP logo screen without even the loading circle. I always have to restart my laptop by holding the power button and thereafter it will work normally again. Initially thought it was a minor problem but this problem has been persistent for quite sometime. Any help will be much appreciated thanks!

Hello, @thejaydee – Hope you are well 🙂

Welcome to the HP Forum! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips.

I understand that your laptop is constantly freezing on HP logo while on startup. Did you make any Software or Hardware changes to your system recently? If so, please specify.

I would like to suggest the steps mentioned below to try and fix this issue:

1) Power drain

Perform a hard reset / Power drain on your notebook. Go to http://hp.care/2byfHyh and follow the steps mentioned to perform a power drain on your HP Spectre.

Check for issue resolution once done. If the issue persists, go to the next step.

2) BIOS Defaults

Perform a BIOS defaults as suggested below:

  • Shutdown the computer.
  • Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
  • Press F10 once for BIOS.
  • Press F9 for BIOS defaults.
  • Press F10 to save and exit.
  • See whether the issue is resolved.

3) System Restore

If the issue started happening after a recent update, then you might be able to restore the system to a point before. System Restore automatically creates restore points, a memory of the system files and settings on the computer at a particular point in time. Then, when you use System Restore to restore your computer to a point in time before an issue began, System Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected.

Check http://hp.care/2c1kggM for details

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Good luck 🙂

Hi there the problem has surface again. The hard reset only temporarily solved the problem. The screen will hang at the hp logo loading screen upon startup and i will have to hold the power button to restart it. It has been ongoing for a few months and i think it is affecting the performance of my laptop. I tried to perform the bios defaults but nothing happens after press the esc button repeatedly. I do not think windows update caused it as even after updating for several times the problem still arises. Please do help me out again! Thanks

Hey there! @thejaydee, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand when you power on your laptop the laptop feezes at HP logo and you have to restart your PC to boot back into windows.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any hardware or software changes on your PC?

As you mentioned when you power on your laptop the laptop feezes at HP logo and you have to restart your PC to boot back into windows.

Try restroring the BIOS to default on your PC and check if it helps.

1.    Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2.    Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3.    On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
4.    Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5.    Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
6.    Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Try the steps recommended below.

I would suggest you enable Fast Start Up on the system and check if it helps. To do this, follow the steps below.
1. Open Control Panel and go to Power Options.
2. Click/tap on the Choose what the power buttons do link on the left side.
3. Click/tap on the Change settings that are currently unavailable link at the top.
4. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.
5. Ensure that Turn on Fast Startup is checked.
6. Restart the computer.

Try updating the BIOS and chipset driver on your PC and check if it helps.

Update the BIOS using this link.

Also, update the chipset drivers using this link.

You can also try updating the drivers using HP support assistant.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP support assistant.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps try the steps recommended below.

In Windows, search for Command Prompt. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Then click Yes.
In Command Prompt, type sfc /scannow. Make sure to include the space between sfc and the /.
Press Enter and wait while System File Checker scans for corrupted files.
When scanning is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.
If the file checker found and replaced any corrupted files, restart the computer and check the performance.
If the file checker did not find any corrupted files or found corrupted files but could not replace them, go to the next step.
If System File Checker finds corrupted files but cannot replace them, use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. DISM checks the corrupted files; then downloads and replaces the files using Windows Update.
In Windows, open a web browser.
   NOTE:
You need to be connected to the Internet to use DISM.
In Windows, search for Command Prompt. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Then click Yes.
In Command Prompt, type dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. Make sure to include the space before each / in the command line.
Press Enter and wait while DISM works. This might take several minutes.
If DISM finds corrupted files, it replaces them using Windows Update. If this occurs, after DISM is finished, restart your computer and see if the performance has improved.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot lock up or freezing issues with PC.

If the issue still persists try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware on your laptop is functioning correctly.

Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC.

Hi thanks for replying 🙂

I did not make any hardware changes. I am not sure about the software changes though. I remember upgrading to windows 10 and changing back to windows 8.1 after a period of time. However the problem was already there before i upgraded to windows 10.

I have a few problems over here:

1. I am unable to enter the BIOS setup menu after repeatedly pressing the f10 key. I tried once after waiting for 5 secs and another time after restarting.

2. I tried updating the chipset driver but it failed. There was a message that says unknown error.

3. I tried updating the BIOS but the "update" option is greyed out. It says that "the BIOS update is blocked on this device"

Also the fast start up is already enabled on my pc. I have not tried the commad prompt yet. What should i do next?Thank you

@thejaydee, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

Did you try running a system diagnostics test on your PC?

As you mentioned when you try to update BIOS you are getting Error: "The BIOS update is blocked on this device".

It looks like your current BIOS version is higher than the version you want to install, the update feature will be disabled automatically.

Also, as you mentioned you are unable to unable to boot into BIOS.

I would suggest you try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.

If you are unable to run hardware diagnostics test from F2, You can run a hardware diagnostics using a USB drive.

Refer this article to know more information about running hardware diagnostics using USB.

If the hardware test fails. Please contact HP support for service options.
