My laptop freezes when going to sleep ONLY if the AC is plugged in. Then there is no way to come out of it except by pressing the start button continuously till it powers off. This messes up the system and it goes through long recovery on startup.

There is NO problem if it is on battery and it goes in and out of sleep normally.

Tried all combinations of power

I suggest you to update the BIOS and drivers.

The last BIOS version its F.32 Rev.A, you can get it in:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp96501-97000/sp96658.exe

 

Attention: Connect the unit to power supply, disable HDD/SSD encryption if you have it

 

You can update all drivers using the HP Support Assistant version 8.6.18.11 Rev.A, you can get it in:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp86501-87000/sp86979.exe
