Laptop was restarting and was interrupted. Now it has a sad face error message UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME then a black backlit screen and has been like that for an hour.

Can you give us the model number of the laptop? Can you boot into diagnostic mode by tapping esc then F2 as you power up? Choose component tests and storage (hard drive) run the long form test and post results back here, please.

I was pretty sure that's what we would see. Hard drive needs replacement so now we really do need the model or product number to help you in a detailed way. It's not as difficult or expensive as you fear.

Yes that seems to be the same model number in the bottom of laptop. Thank you for your help.
