HP Pavilion 14 Laptop PC 14-dv2000 (4Z018AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Whenever I put my HP Pavilion laptop into sleep or hibernate mode, it heats up so much that I can't touch it. Then, the screen turns off, the laptop locks, and the battery drains completely. It takes almost 15 minutes to restart after that

Hi @Rameez_bpl,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with your laptop overheating.

The overheating and battery drain issues with your HP Pavilion 14 Laptop PC 14-dv2000 when it is in sleep or hibernate mode are concerning and suggest that the laptop may not be entering these power-saving states correctly. This can be due to a variety of reasons, such as background processes running, drivers not functioning properly, or hardware-related issues.

Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and fix the problem:

1. Check Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and ensure that the correct power plan is selected.
  • Click on Change plan settings next to your selected plan, then Change advanced power settings.
  • Under Sleep, check the settings for Sleep after, Hibernate after, and Allow wake timers. Ensure these are set correctly, with sleep and hibernate set to engage after a reasonable period.

2. Disable Fast Startup:

  • Fast Startup can sometimes cause issues with sleep and hibernate modes. To disable it:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable, then uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).

3. Update Drivers and BIOS:

  • Update the BIOS: An outdated BIOS can cause power management issues. Visit the HP support website, look for your specific model, and download the latest BIOS update.
  • Update Drivers: Ensure that your chipset and graphics drivers are up to date. These drivers manage how your laptop handles sleep and hibernate modes. You can update drivers through Device Manager or by downloading the latest versions from the HP support site.

4. Check for Background Processes:

  • Open Task Manager and check if there are any processes consuming high CPU or disk usage when you put the laptop to sleep or hibernate. Disable unnecessary startup programs and services that might prevent the laptop from entering low-power states properly.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @Rameez_bpl ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

5. Disable Connected Standby (Modern Standby):

  • Some laptops use Modern Standby, which can cause overheating and battery drain issues. To disable it, you need to change a setting in the Windows registry:
    • Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
    • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power.
    • Look for CsEnabled and change its value to 0. If the key does not exist, this step can be skipped.

6. Check for Hardware Issues:

  • Battery and Cooling System: Overheating and battery drain could indicate issues with the cooling system or the battery itself. Make sure the laptop vents are not blocked, clean any dust with compressed air, and check if the fans are working correctly.
  • Run HP Hardware Diagnostics: Use the built-in HP Hardware Diagnostics to test your battery and thermal systems.

7. Perform a Clean Boot:

  • A clean boot will start Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs to help determine if a background program is interfering.
  • Type msconfig in the search bar, select System Configuration, go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all. Go to the Startup tab, and click Open Task Manager. Disable all startup items and restart your laptop.

8. Restore Power Options to Default:

  • In Power Options, click on Restore default settings for this plan to reset all power settings to their default values.

9. Test Sleep and Hibernate Modes:

  • After making these changes, test the sleep and hibernate modes again to see if the problem persists.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be necessary to consider a hardware inspection or contact HP support for further assistance. The overheating and prolonged restart times suggest that the laptop is not correctly entering or exiting power-saving states, which could indicate a deeper hardware problem that might require repair.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
