My laptop is not turning on no matter what i do, i press the power button and the light starts to blink three times immediately. I tried plugging in my charger but it still won't turn on, I tried holding the power button but that didnt work either, instead it kept blinking three times consecutively after a brief few seconds. I kept the charger in all night and when i woke up, it wouldn't turn on at all. The charger isnt charging it either.

Hi @Xander35,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

We understand how concerning this must be, especially when your HP laptop won't turn on, the power light blinks three times, and it does not appear to charge even after being connected to the charger overnight.

Your laptop does not power on, the charging process does not appear to start, and pressing the power button causes the LED to blink three times repeatedly.

Three consecutive LED blinks on an HP laptop can indicate a hardware-related issue, such as a power delivery problem, memory issue, or system board fault. In some cases, residual electrical charge or an issue with the AC adapter can also prevent the system from starting normally.

1. Perform a Hard Reset

A hard reset removes residual electrical charge from the system and can resolve startup issues caused by temporary hardware states.

  1. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  2. Remove all connected devices, including USB drives, external monitors, memory cards, and peripherals.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for 30–60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the AC adapter directly to a wall outlet (avoid using a power strip or extension cord).
  5. Press the Power button once to see if the laptop starts.

2. Verify the Power Source

If the laptop still does not turn on, confirm that the power source is working properly.

  1. Plug the charger into a different wall outlet.
  2. If your AC adapter has a status LED, verify that it remains illuminated when connected to power.
  3. If available, test with another compatible HP charger to rule out an issue with the adapter.

A faulty charger or power source can prevent the battery from charging and the laptop from powering on.

If the issue is caused by residual power or a temporary power management fault, the hard reset should allow the laptop to start normally. If the three-blink pattern continues, it may indicate a hardware issue that requires further diagnosis.

To help identify the cause more accurately, could you please provide the following information?

  • What is the exact model of your HP laptop (for example, HP Pavilion, HP ENVY, HP OMEN, or the full product number)?
  • Does the LED on the charger remain on when it is plugged into the wall?

Have a great day!

I'm an HP Employee.
