Hi @Swilson1982, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding laptop's battery
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
That battery alert is like your laptop giving you a gentle nudge, saying, "Hey, I’m running on fumes here!" 🔋 While updating the BIOS can sometimes help with battery management, a low-capacity battery usually means it’s nearing the end of its lifespan.
If you’re unsure which BIOS update to choose, I’d recommend going with the most recent, as long as it’s compatible with your device.
However, before considering a replacement, try the following troubleshooting steps:
Check Battery Health Using HP Hardware Diagnostics
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press the Power button and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly.
- When the Startup Menu appears, press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Click on Component Tests > Power > Battery Test.
- Run the test and note the Battery Status (e.g., “Replace” or “OK”).
Update BIOS (if applicable)
Updating the BIOS can sometimes help improve battery performance. Since you mentioned two BIOS update options:
- If the December 2022 BIOS update is the latest one available, it is recommended to install it.
- To check the correct BIOS version:
- Type System Information in the Windows search bar and open it.
- Look for the BIOS Version/Date.
- Compare it with the available updates on HP’s support website.
📌 Important: Ensure the laptop is plugged into AC power while updating the BIOS.
Perform a Battery Calibration
- Charge the battery to 100%, then keep it plugged in for an extra 2 hours.
- Unplug the charger and let the laptop drain to 0% until it shuts down.
- Leave it off for at least 3 hours.
- Plug in the charger and turn on the laptop.
Replace the Battery (If needed)
- If the HP Hardware Diagnostics test shows "Replace Battery" and the issue persists even after troubleshooting, the battery has degraded and needs replacement.
- You can purchase a genuine HP battery from HP’s official website or an authorized reseller.
Let me know how it goes
