  • It's an HP pavilion core i5 8th gen 13" laptop that I dual boot windows and arch on.
  • While on the windows os, I left the laptop idle and it slept itself only to comeback to a dead laptop.
  • On pressing the power button, the power led would come on for some seconds and go off.
  • After taking out the internal battery and trying the hard reset procedure, the power led blinking continuously really fast and I can hear a little ticking sound on the motherboard.
  • What might be the issue?
  • Note: I'm using a drive from a legacy BIOS Lenovo laptop then reconfigured the whole UEFI to work with this HP laptop.

Hi @Pjreaker,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Based on what you've described, this appears to be occurring before either Windows or Arch Linux has a chance to load, so we should first focus on the hardware and BIOS side of the system.

A couple of important points:

  • The drive configuration and dual-boot setup typically would not cause the power LED to blink rapidly with a ticking sound from the motherboard.
  • HP BIOS firmware is specific to the motherboard and hardware configuration. If any BIOS-related modifications or settings from another system were used, they may not be compatible with the HP platform and could lead to startup issues.

As a first step, please try a BIOS Recovery:

  1. Disconnect all external devices.
  2. Connect the AC adapter.
  3. Press and hold the Windows + B keys.
  4. While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B for several more seconds.
  6. If the HP BIOS Recovery screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions.

If the notebook starts successfully after the recovery, I would recommend installing the latest HP BIOS available for your exact model from the HP support website.

If the notebook still does not start, please check the LED blink pattern carefully:

  • Does the Caps Lock LED blink?
  • Does the Num Lock LED blink?
  • How many blinks occur before the pattern repeats?

The blink pattern can help identify whether the issue is related to the BIOS, memory, system board, processor, or another hardware component.

Also, when you removed the internal battery:

  • Did you test the notebook with only the AC adapter connected?
  • Did the fast blinking and ticking sound occur immediately when pressing the power button?

Please provide the exact HP Pavilion model number, if available, along with the blink count pattern, and we'll help determine the next steps.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello @VikramTheGreat

Thank you for your response.

But I have actually tried all the steps you suggested but none worked.

As for the blinking, it blinking continuously with no pattern. It blinks till I press and hold the power button down.

According to AI, seems like a motherboard issue I guess.

It's really frustrating.

But thanks for caring.

Hi @Pjreaker,

Thank you for the update, and I appreciate you taking the time to try all of the suggested troubleshooting steps.

I understand how frustrating this can be, especially when you've already gone through the recommended procedures without any improvement.

Before concluding that the issue may be related to the motherboard, could you please check whether you are able to bypass the blinking screen and access the BIOS?

  1. Power on the device.
  2. Repeatedly tap F10 as soon as you press the power button.
  3. Let us know if you can enter the BIOS Setup screen.

If you can access the BIOS, I would also recommend running the HP Hardware Diagnostics Extensive Test:

  1. Power on the device and repeatedly tap Esc.
  2. Select F2 - System Diagnostics.
  3. Run the Extensive Test (or the longest available system test).
  4. If any test fails, please note the Failure ID and share it with us.

The Failure ID can be very helpful in determining whether the issue is related to the motherboard, memory, storage, or another hardware component.

Please let us know:

  • Whether you can access the BIOS (F10).
  • Whether you can access HP Diagnostics (F2).
  • Any Failure ID or error message you receive.

We'll be happy to review the results and help determine the next steps.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello @VikramTheGreat

The laptop is not booting up at all, nothing works.

The power led only blinks continuously even the fan doesn't work but the laptop charges properly.

Though I already hand it over to a laptop engineer and hope he fixes it, if not I hope he doesn't damage the board further.

Thanks

Hi @Pjreaker,

Since you have already entrusted the device to a qualified laptop technician, that is probably the best course of action at this stage. They will be able to perform component-level diagnostics and determine whether the issue is related to the motherboard, power circuitry, memory, or another hardware component.

I appreciate you keeping us informed of the situation. Hopefully, the technician will be able to identify the root cause and restore the system without any further complications.

If the technician can provide any diagnostic findings, error codes, or details about the failed component, please feel free to share them with us. We'll be happy to review the information and provide any additional guidance we can.

Thank you again for the update, and I hope the repair goes smoothly.
