I bought a new HP omni X AI laptop about 2 yrs ago. A few months after purchase, it stopped powering on. Being under warranty then, I was sent to HP and they said they reseated the battery and worked fine. It did work the first time when I brought it home. did not use it for months and when I needed to use it again, it won't power up, by then the warranty has expired.

Since then, I have to remove the battery cord... put the power cord to the computer....press the power button a few times and reattach the battery cord (this is the cord that goes into the internal battery)...before it powers on. works fine once it powers on.

I run HP diagnostics, passes w/o error or fault identified. I tied pressing the power button for 15 min or more.

Looking for any help

Hi  @auftiuk

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that your HP Omni X AI laptop only powers on after disconnecting and reconnecting the internal battery cable, while it operates normally once started. I appreciate the detailed information you've shared.

I would also like to ask a few questions to better understand the situation:

  • Does the issue occur regardless of whether the AC adapter is connected?
  • When the laptop does not power on, do you see any LED activity (power light, charging light, keyboard backlight, etc.)?
  • Has the battery ever been replaced, or is it the original battery that came with the laptop?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

  1. Verify BIOS Version
    • Check whether your laptop is running the latest BIOS available from HP.
    • BIOS updates often include improvements for power management and battery communication.
  2. Perform a Battery Calibration ( Click here for steps )
    • Fully charge the battery to 100%.
    • Disconnect the charger and allow the battery to discharge through normal use.
    • Recharge the laptop uninterrupted to 100%.
  3. Run Extensive Hardware Diagnostics (Click here for steps )
    • Turn off the laptop.
    • Press the Power button and immediately tap F2 repeatedly.
    • Select Component Tests and run:
      • Battery Test
      • Power Adapter Test
      • System Board Test (if available)
  4. Reset BIOS to Default Settings
    • Press F10 during startup to enter BIOS.
    • Load BIOS defaults.
    • Save changes and restart.

Because the laptop only starts after reconnecting the internal battery cable, it may also be helpful to determine whether the issue is related to power management, battery communication, or another hardware component. The answers to the questions above will help narrow this down.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
