Hi everyone! As of yesterday I am facing a problem for the first time. My laptop goes into sleep mode randomly and repeatedly. Even as im writing this its happened three to four times. The screen goes dark and the light on the power button flashes slowly as if the computer has gone into sleep mode. I press the enter button to try and turn on the screen but its irresponsive. It only lights up if i press enter repeatedly. Im slightly panicking because its the first time ive come across this issue and i have deadlines to catch the next weeks so not having a computer is out of question (unless if its absolutely neceesary). Id apreciate it if someone had a suggestion as to why this is happening. Thanks in advance!

Hi @kchal,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that your HP Laptop goes into sleep mode repeatedly within a second.

Step-by-Step Fixes to Try Right Now

Once you have a moment, run through these troubleshooting steps:

1. Check for Overheating

When internal components (CPU/GPU) hit dangerous temperatures, laptops will instantly force a sleep/shutdown to prevent hardware damage.

  • Ensure your laptop is on a flat, hard surface (not a bed or blanket) so the vents are clear.

  • If the fan is making loud, grinding noises, or the bottom of the laptop is extremely hot to the touch, this is likely the cause.

2. Prevent the "Lid Close" Action from Sleeping

A faulty lid sensor will repeatedly trigger sleep mode. You can disable this to narrow down the issue.

  1. Click the Start button, type Control Panel, and open it.

  2. Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.

  3. Click "Choose what closing the lid does" on the left menu.

  4. Set When I close the lid to Do nothing for both "On battery" and "Plugged in", then save the changes.

3. Run the Windows Power Troubleshooter

This tool automatically detects and resets corrupted power settings.

  1. Press the Windows Key + X and select Settings.

  2. Search for Troubleshoot.

  3. Click on Other troubleshooters (or just look for the list of troubleshooters).

  4. Find Power, and click Run.

4. Update the Graphics Driver:

Outdated or corrupted display adapters can cause the screen to go black and the system to lose track of whether it is awake or asleep.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.

  2. Expand the Display adapters category.

  3. Right-click your graphics card and select Update driver.

  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

Turns out it was a motherboard issue. Thanks for the help though!
