Hi, my laptop screen remains off while the caps lock key stays on. If isn’t blinking but it is on and if I hold the power button it turns off after awhile but as soon as I lift my finger it turns back on. I’ve plugged it in and tried it while unplugged as well but it won’t work either way. Please help!

Hi @SimonC4,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a hardware or system issue with your HP laptop. The fact that the screen remains off, the caps lock key is on, and there's an issue with the power button behavior suggests that there might be a problem with the laptop's internal components or its power management system.
Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue.
- Hard Reset: Disconnect the laptop from any power source and remove the battery if possible. Then, press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds. Reconnect the battery and power source, and try turning on the laptop again.
- External Monitor Test: Connect your laptop to an external monitor using the appropriate video cable. This can help determine if the issue is with the laptop's display or with its internal components.
- RAM and Hard Drive Check: Sometimes faulty RAM or a malfunctioning hard drive can cause startup issues. If you're comfortable opening your laptop, you could try reseating the RAM modules and checking the hard drive connections.
- BIOS Reset: Some issues can be resolved by resetting the BIOS settings to default. This process varies depending on the laptop model, so refer to your laptop's manual for instructions.
- Hardware Disconnect: Disconnect any external devices, such as USB drives or printers, and remove any recently added hardware components.
- System Diagnostics: Many laptops have built-in diagnostic tools that can help identify hardware issues. You can usually access these tools by pressing a specific key during startup, such as F2 or F12. Check your laptop's manual for instructions on how to run diagnostics.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden! Thank you very much for your message as it helped me try to fix my laptop but unfortunately it still won’t work properly. Occasionally it will work fine and then I’ll turn it off and it will start all over again. I don’t think it’s a display problem as, like I said, it occasionally works fine for a few days and then malfunctions, so I’m assuming it’s an internal issue. I’ve got no external devices connected and I’ve tried your 15 second power off method but it still isn’t responding. If I hold the power button down and lift it then the caps lock will light up again. I’m uncomfortable with opening up my laptop and I’m out of ideas so if you have any other solutions please tell me. Thank you Alden and have a nice day!
