Hi @PROFFYOUNG,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop shuts down abruptly even when the battery and charger are in good condition, the issue might be related to software, overheating, hardware components, or power settings. Here are some steps to diagnose and potentially fix the problem.

Check for Overheating

  • Clean the vents: Dust and debris can block the cooling vents, causing the laptop to overheat. Use compressed air to clean the vents.
  • Check the cooling fan: Ensure the cooling fan is working correctly. You can use software like HWMonitor or SpeedFan to monitor the temperature and fan speeds.

Run Hardware Diagnostics

  • HP PC Hardware Diagnostics: Use the built-in HP diagnostics tool. Restart your laptop and press the F2 key repeatedly to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. Run the System Tests to check for any hardware issues.
  • Third-party tools: Use tools like MemTest86 to check for memory issues and CrystalDiskInfo to check the health of your hard drive or SSD.

Update Software and Drivers

  • BIOS update: Ensure your BIOS is up to date. You can download the latest BIOS update from the HP Support website.
  • Driver updates: Update all drivers, especially chipset and power management drivers. Use the HP Support Assistant to check for updates.

Check Power Settings

  • Power Plan settings: Go to Control Panel > Power Options and ensure that the power plan settings are appropriate and not set to aggressive power-saving modes that could cause shutdowns.
  • Advanced power settings: Check the advanced power settings to ensure components like the hard disk and sleep settings are correctly configured.

Inspect the Event Viewer

  • Windows Event Viewer: Open Event Viewer (type "Event Viewer" in the Start menu) and check for any critical errors or warnings around the times your laptop shuts down. Look for errors related to power or hardware failures.

Test in Safe Mode

  • Boot into Safe Mode: Restart your laptop and press F8 (or Shift + Restart) to enter Safe Mode. If the problem does not occur in Safe Mode, it might be related to software or drivers.

Check for Software Conflicts

  • Antivirus software: Ensure your antivirus software is not causing the issue. Try temporarily disabling it to see if the problem persists.
  • Recent changes: Uninstall any recently installed software or updates that might be causing conflicts.

Inspect the Hardware Components

  • RAM: Reseat the RAM modules and ensure they are properly installed.
  • Hard Drive/SSD: Check the connection of the hard drive or SSD.

Power Supply Issues

  • Charger and power outlet: Ensure the charger and power outlet are working correctly. Try using a different charger or outlet.
  • Battery connection: Check if the battery is seated properly. If removable, try operating the laptop with the battery removed and just the charger connected.

Operating System Issues

  • Windows repair: Use the built-in Windows tools to repair the OS. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and use the "Reset this PC" or "Advanced startup" options.
  • Reinstall Windows: If all else fails, consider backing up your data and performing a clean installation of Windows.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
