My laptop shuts down when I close the lid or leave it unattended for too long. I set my settings so that it goes to sleep mode when the lid is closed and it's left idle, both plugged in and not. Also, when I try to turn it back on the power button usually wont work. I end up closing and opening the lid a lot and holding down the power button for different amounts of time and repeatedly pressing it until one time finally the white light glows and I know it's on. I have not been able to solve this after lots of searching, can anyone please help?

@lukeyc Welcome to HP Community!
I understand your laptop shuts down when you close the lid or press the power button once on your PC.
Don't worry I'd like to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?
Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.
As you mentioned your laptop shuts down when you close the lid or press the power button once on your PC.
Please try few steps recommended below.
1. Go to "Control Panel" and then "Power Options".
2. Click on "Change plan settings", next to the plan you are using.
3. Now click "Change advanced power settings".
4. Scroll down and locate "Power buttons and lid.
5. Click the "plus" to open that and then click "Power button action".
6. Click the blue work/link next to "Setting:" and change "Do nothing", if you want don't want your laptop to be turned off.
7. Now click "Apply" and then finally click "OK".
If the issue still persists try updating Chipset driver and BIOS on your PC and check if it helps.
