Hi @Sariejayne,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that your HP Laptop shuts down by itself after the HP logo.

These step-by-step methods will help you identify and fix the issue:

1. Perform a Hard Reset:

This discharges stored power in the capacitors and forces the motherboard to rescan all hardware.

  • Turn off the laptop and unplug the power adapter.

  • Unplug all USB drives, mice, printers, or external monitors.

  • Press and hold the Power button for 40 to 60 seconds.

  • Plug in the power adapter (do not plug in other USB devices yet) and turn the laptop on.

2. Test Hardware Components:

If the hard reset does not work, you can test the internal hardware to find the root cause.

  • Turn off the laptop, turn it back on, and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI menu.

  • Run the Component Tests or System Quick Test to check the Memory (RAM) and Hard Drive for faults.

3. Check the RAM and Battery:

  • RAM: If your laptop has removable RAM, a loose connection will prevent it from booting. Open the back panel (if your warranty allows), remove the memory sticks, clean the contacts gently with an eraser, and re-insert them securely.

  • Battery: A severely degraded battery can cause a power cut the moment the CPU pulls high power. Try removing the battery (if it is an older removable type) and powering the laptop on solely with the AC adapter.

4. Check for Overheating:

If the thermal paste on your CPU has dried up or the cooling vents are heavily clogged with dust, the laptop will shut off immediately to prevent components from burning out.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your answer. The first didn’t work. I tried the f2 option but it shut down before it could run a test.

Thank you for your response.

1. Hard Power Reset

Draining residual motherboard power can sometimes clear hardware glitches.

  • Turn off the laptop and unplug the charger (and any connected USB drives/mice).

  • Press and hold the Power button for 40 to 45 seconds.

  • Plug the charger back in and turn the laptop on.

2. Check for Severe Overheating

If your laptop's fan is clogged with dust, it will quickly overheat, triggering an automatic safety shutdown to protect the processor.

  • Listen closely when the laptop turns on. If you hear a loud, grinding fan or no fan noise at all, the cooling system may have failed.

  • Ensure the bottom vents and side exhaust ports are not blocked. Clean out any visible dust with a can of compressed air.

3. Isolate the RAM

If a RAM stick is loose or faulty, the laptop will often shut off immediately upon boot or during a diagnostic test.

  • If you are comfortable doing so, remove the laptop's back cover, take out the RAM modules, and wipe the gold contacts gently with a clean eraser. Reseat the RAM firmly into the slot.

4. Troubleshoot the Power/Battery

A worn-out battery or a frayed power cable can cause sudden power loss.

  • Remove the battery (if your model has a removable one) or ensure the charger is securely plugged into a working wall outlet.

  • Try running the laptop with just the AC adapter (no battery) if possible, or try a different, known-working HP charger.
