I have an HP ENVY Laptop that will absolutely not boot up.

It started up like normal and then froze / crashed on a YouTube video, so I powered it off. When it came back on, it said it didn’t shut down correctly and was starting back up, but got stuck in a loading loop on the HP screen. I powered it off again and instead it got stuck in the loop of “preparing automatic repair”, both of which just spin for several minutes and do nothing.

I have tried hard resets, I have run system diagnostic tests (everything has passed), I have even tried system recovery in the startup menu, but it just loads with “Please Wait” for five minutes before saying “Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’ll restart for you” and jumping right back into the cycle of getting stuck.

Hi @ebenson7

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how discouraging it feels when your HP ENVY laptop gets stuck in a boot loop and even automatic repair doesn’t resolve it, especially after you’ve already tried hard resets, diagnostics, and recovery.

You’ve been thorough, so let’s move into deeper steps that can break the cycle and get Windows loading again.

Step‑by‑step actions

1. Access Advanced Startup Options

  • Power on the laptop and as soon as the HP logo appears, press F11 repeatedly.
  • This should open the Advanced Startup Options menu.
  • If it doesn’t, interrupt startup three times (power off during the HP logo) and Windows should force the recovery menu.

2. Use Startup Repair

  • In Advanced Options, select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Repair.
  • Allow Windows to attempt automatic fixes.
  • Restart and check if the loop clears.

3. Boot into Safe Mode

  • From Advanced Options, select Startup Settings > Restart.
  • Press 4 or F4 to boot into Safe Mode.
  • If Safe Mode loads, uninstall any recent updates or drivers that may have triggered the crash.
  • Restart normally afterward.

4. Perform System Restore

  • In Advanced Options, select System Restore.
  • Choose a restore point created before the crash occurred.
  • This rolls back system files without affecting personal data.

5. Run Command Prompt repair tools

  • In Advanced Options, select Command Prompt.
  • Run the following commands one by one:
    sfc /scannow
    chkdsk C: /f /r
  • These commands repair corrupted system files and check disk integrity.
  • Restart after completion.

6. Reset the PC (last resort)

  • In Advanced Options, select Reset this PC.
  • Choose Keep my files to reinstall Windows while preserving personal data.
  • This clears persistent boot loops when other methods fail.

Your HP ENVY laptop is stuck because Windows cannot complete startup after the crash. By entering Advanced Startup Options, running Startup Repair, testing Safe Mode, restoring the system, repairing files with Command Prompt, or resetting the PC, you can break the loop and return to normal operation.
