I am having trouble shutting down my laptop. I had recently upgraded my HDD from a 1TB to 2TB hybrid HDD, reinstalled my software amongst other things, everythiong was fine. I then installed the new Norton 2018 with Norton Utilities as well as Windows updates once i had installed those two things I started having trouble shutting my laptop down. I unistalled Norton utilities as it's the only new piece of software i've started using but i am still having trouble.

I have also checked Drivers, Scanned for Malware, uninstalled unwanted software, tweeked Norton so that I stop certain apps from Booting up etc

Does anyone have any ideas on how to rectify this problem? It's driving me crazy

Hi @Dubber

Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.

I understand that the Notebook is not shutting down and you have just reinstalled the OS.

I'll be glad to help

May I know how did you reinstall the Operating System? Did you use the HP Recovery Media to reload the OS

Please download and run the HP Support Assistant from Here to install all the HP Updates

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available.

If the issue persists, I suggest you do a System Restore to an earlier time before the issue started, since the update might have corrupted the Windows.

- Select the Start button, type control panel and then choose it from the list of results.
- Search Control Panel for Recovery.
- Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.
- Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next > Finish.

Keep me posted how it goes.

Thank you. 🙂

Hi KrazyToad,

I have checked the updates and everything is up to date, including drivers. Is there any other way to fix the problem rather than restore to previous state? I would rather find out the cause rather than just restore.

Hi @Dubber

The problem seems to have be caused by one of the recent updates. We can try a Restore and keep the Notebook under observation and check which incoming update is causing the problem. I also suggest completing all Windows update before installing any Antivirus or 3rd party Softwares.

Did you use the HP Recovery Media to reload the OS or did you install a retail copy of Windows?

Thanks.

Hi KrazyToad,

I ordered the recovery Disk from HP and i used that. is there a usual update that causes this kind of problem as i'd much rather try uninstalling the updates and see if that works rather than restoring. I'm just not sure when it was that this happened to be honest. I have ran Norton Scans as well as Malware scans and all is clear.

Hi @Dubber

Since we are not sure which particular update is causing this problem, I suggest we do the System Restore to an earlier time and if any upcoming updates causes the problem to reoccur, we will be able to narrow it down and delete those particular updates and stop it from getting installed again.

Thanks 🙂
