@Babmac, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop won’t power up, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Basic Checks

  1. Disconnect all peripherals: Remove USB drives, external monitors, printers, etc.
  2. Check the power source:
    • Ensure the power adapter is plugged in securely.
    • Try a different wall outlet.
    • Inspect the power cable and adapter for damage.

Perform a Hard Reset

This helps clear residual electrical charge and reset hardware connections.

For laptops with removable battery:

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Remove the battery and unplug the AC adapter.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the battery and AC adapter.
  5. Try powering on the laptop.

For laptops with non-removable battery:

  1. Unplug the AC adapter.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the AC adapter and try powering on.

Check for LED Indicators

  • Power LED: Is it blinking or off?
  • Charging LED: Does it light up when plugged in?
  • If there are blinking lights, note the pattern, it may indicate a hardware issue.

Try a BIOS Recovery

If the laptop shows signs of life (like fan noise or lights) but doesn’t boot:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Press and hold Windows + B keys, then press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds.
  3. Release all keys and wait for the BIOS recovery screen.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi thank you for your suggestions.  I have given the laptop to a computer specialist who has examined it and everything about it is dead.. I'm really annoyed as it's only 2+ years old and rarely used.  Anyway thanks for your help.
