Holy crap, RAM that's too fast. First time I've heard about that in 15 years. Granted, this is my first laptop but I usually buy low end motherboards for my desktops (but RAM with the best timing in a reasonable price range) and never encountered this issue.
Here's hoping that the ASUS laptop I just ordered will be able to handle these 32 GB I bought and that they're not as obnoxious about "you're only allowed to use our products". At least when it comes to charging through USB-C, they make no mention of "you can only use ASUS docking stations!!"
But huge thanks to everyone here for making me realize that not only is my machine still just fine but I can actually use at least 24 GB by combining 8 GB that came with the machine and one 16 GB stick. (They still haven't fixed the BIOS to use slower timings if the ones of the RAM are too fast - flashed the latest one (February 2020) just before. Problem still exists.)

For those who don't know by the way - not using dual channel results in a huge performance loss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_aPaj5QkmM
Personally, I still need at least those 24 GB for work until I get that non-HP laptop but anyone who can avoid running mismatched RAM sticks probably should.
