Laptop is a black screen when comes on and either says ESC or F10 or F11 service recovery but after this nothing follows or comes up on the screen and is stuck on this and will only turn on when conncected to a charger x

I see that laptop is not booting to F11 recovery manager and also computer boots up only when ac adapter plugged in,
Since you are able to use a notebook when it is plugged-in, it is a great indicator that your charger adapter is not the issue. Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
- What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824 (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
- Are you try to boot in too F11bsystem recovery manager?
- When was the last time it worked fine?
- Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
While you respond to that, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
Battery Test:
Follow these steps to perform the Battery Test:
- In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click Battery.
- Click Run once. The Battery Test begins.
- When the battery test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen. For additional battery information, click Battery Details.
If the test passes, continue with these steps:
1. Go to Start, search for Device Manager, and open this result.
2. Expand batteries.
3. Right-click on the ACPI option (usually the 2nd option) and select delete or uninstall. Follow the prompts.
4. Shut down the computer.
5. Disconnect the charger.
6. Remove the battery.
7. Hold down the power button for 1 minute.
8. Insert the battery only.
9. Attempt to turn the battery on.
Also, you can update your computer software and check:
Use the HP Support Assistant to automatically install computer updates, such as updated drivers, system updates, and useful utilities.
Firstly: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.
Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
Perform any other update management actions as needed.
