My HP laptop won't wake up unless I open the lid after it is not used for some hours. Once lid opened and closed again, it works normally. Due to this issue, I cannot use remote desktop app.

@samyK, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you’re facing, where the laptop won't wake from sleep unless the lid is opened after a few hours usually relates to Modern Standby, power management, or BIOS/firmware-level settings.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve or work around this:
Check Wake Settings for Network Access
Since you're using Remote Desktop, ensure your laptop allows network activity to wake it.
Steps:
- Press Windows + R, type control, and press Enter.
- Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Expand Sleep > Allow wake timers:
- On battery: Enable
- Plugged in: Enable
- Expand Network connectivity in Standby:
- Set to Enable (if available).
If you don’t see these options, your device likely uses Modern Standby, which is managed differently.
Disable Modern Standby (Optional Advanced Tweak)
Modern Standby often prevents the system from waking properly unless the lid is opened. If you’re okay with using legacy S3 sleep instead (better for wake-on-LAN), you can disable Modern Standby—but note that not all HP laptops support legacy sleep.
Disabling Modern Standby involves registry editing and may disable some low-power features. Proceed only if comfortable with technical changes.
Steps to Check Current Standby Mode:
Open Command Prompt as admin.
Run:
powercfg /a
If it says:
"Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Disconnected", you're using Modern Standby.
To Disable Modern Standby:
- Press Windows + R, type regedit, press Enter.
- Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power
- Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value named:
PlatformAoAcOverride
- Set its value to 0.
- Reboot your PC.
Enable Wake-on-LAN in BIOS
Even if Windows is set correctly, the BIOS needs to allow wake functions.
Steps:
- Reboot and press Esc or F10 (varies by model) to enter BIOS.
- Look for Advanced > Power Management or Built-in Device Options.
- Enable Wake on LAN/WLAN or Network Boot.
- Save changes and exit.
Update BIOS and Drivers
Do this via:
Or the HP Drivers & Software page
Make sure:
- BIOS is up to date
- Chipset, Intel ME, and LAN/Wi-Fi drivers are updated
Test Remote Wake
After making these changes, try waking the laptop using:
- Wake-on-LAN tools (like WOL Magic Packet Sender) from another device.
- Your Remote Desktop app, if it's configured to send WOL packets.
Optional: Use Hibernate Instead of Sleep
If the problem persists, configure the laptop to hibernate instead of sleep.
Steps:
- Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Expand Power buttons and lid > Lid close action:
- Set to Hibernate
- Expand Sleep > Hibernate after:
- Set a reasonable time (e.g., 30 mins)
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
