HP 14s
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have a HP 14s  with a 10th gen Intel processor. It was working fine up until a few weeks ago, when it started to power off mid boot. Power off – as in all power is cut to the laptop and then a few seconds later it reboots. This happens each time the laptop is started up and this behaviour loops until you hold the power button to fully turn it off. This behaviour only occurs after Windows starts its boot process, with the device occasionally getting to the Windows Welcome login screen before it powers off once again. The device can sit in the BIOS without any issues and the issue doesn’t occur prior to an OS boot process beginning. The problem even occurs when you attempt to boot Ubuntu Linux from a USB drive.

The behaviour is more in line with a thermal event rather than a boot issue. There are no errors or BSoD displayed. I can confirm the fan(s) and cooling system is working correctly. As the device is out of its HP warranty, I’ve also tried the following without success:

  • Reseated / swapped the RAM (tried both DIMM slots
  • Replaced the SSD internal storage
  • Followed the HP hard reset process. Removing the battery etc
  • Upgraded the BIOS to the latest version from HP’s website
  • Attempted to boot into both a Windows install USB & Ubuntu linux
  • Reset BIOS and TMP chip to factory defaults

I found an article also on the HP community support site that referred to laptops doing similar to what I am seeing and describing above and there is a BIOS patch you can download and apply. However the article wasn’t dated so I didn’t know if it was safe to apply to my device. It’s a Winflash patch that needs to be run from within Windows, with the issue causing Windows to be non-functional due to the continuous power off’s, if it was safe to apply to the device I would need further direction on how best to accomplish this.

Any help and support you can offer would be welcomed as there is no obvious reason as to why the device has started behaving in this manor.

Thank you.
