@vsv2022, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding a new system!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you're trying to install Linux on your HP 17.3-inch Laptop (cn4016ua), but you're running into issues booting from your USB or DVD. While HP officially supports the pre-installed operating system, I totally get that you want to explore other options!

A few things you can try:

  • Make sure Secure Boot is disabled in the BIOS. Some HP laptops have it enabled by default, which can prevent booting from external media.
  • Check if Legacy Boot (or CSM) is enabled—some Linux distros need this.
  • Try different USB ports or another USB stick—some ports may not be detected for booting.
  • Double-check the ISO was written properly. Using Rufus (for Windows) or balenaEtcher can help create a bootable USB correctly.

For more detailed guidance, I’d recommend checking out this thread from our community, where other users have successfully installed Linux on similar HP laptops:

Hi, zoey7886!

I am really grateful for your answer on my post and I must say that it was my fault when I couldn't load from flash.

I used to modify ISO to add stage3*.tar and it has been working all time. But it doesn't work for this new hardware with UEFI.

So I have written ISO with liveDVD using dd utility to start system instalation, stage3*tar I've written to the second flash.

I've installed system successfully and I like my new notebook!

Thank you 😊
