I changed the passcode/word recently and am currently locked out of my laptop.

How can I unlock it without paying to get it done and losing all data saved?

Hi @Josie161,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how stressful it is to be locked out of your laptop, especially when you want to keep your data safe. Here are the official, safe options to regain access without losing your files:

1. Use Microsoft Account Password Reset (If Linked)

If your HP laptop uses a Microsoft account to sign in:

  • Go to Microsoft Password Reset on another device.
  • Reset your password and then log in with the new one.

2. Use Windows Password Reset Options

  • On the login screen, click “I forgot my password” and follow the prompts.
  • If you set up security questions or a PIN, you can use those to regain access.

3. Use Safe Mode with Command Prompt (Local Account)

If it’s a local account and you forgot the password:

  • Restart the laptop and press F11 or Shift + RestartTroubleshoot → Advanced Options → Command Prompt.
  • From there, you can enable the hidden Administrator account and reset your password:
    net user Administrator /active:yes
    net user YourUsername NewPassword

(Requires admin privileges and is supported by Windows recovery tools.)

4. Use Password Reset Disk (If Created Before)

If you made a password reset disk earlier, insert it and follow the on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
