Apologies for re-posting this, but I believe my previous thread was closed in error. I am specifically *not* asking for advice on bypassing the UEFI password, but for any clues on what my system's behaviour would be if the wrong password is entered as I have multiple options but am not sure which one is the right one.

My ProBook 445 G8 has a password lock on the UEFI settings (but not on boot/power-on) but I do not know what it is.  I have some options to try, but I am concerned that if I enter the wrong one too many times my otherwise perfectly working laptop will lock down and refuse to boot.

Is this a thing that would happen? Or will the wrong password only lock me out of the UEFI settings, given the password is on the UEFI settings only and not required for a normal boot? Does the "wrong password" counter reset on reboot, or only once the correct password is entered?

Unfortunately, for problem with passwords you will need to contact an HP agent.

  • Sign in to your support page
  • Select the product you need help with and scroll down to support options.
  • Select "Contact us". You can change country and language if necessary.

Here is HP's official policy regarding BIOS passwords:
