Laptop was laggy and very hot, so i turned off to let cool down. Once turned back on, the usual lock screen background has changed to a folder, and when clicking anywhere or pressing any key the screen goes back for 30 seconds then turns back on to the same thing. And no, i haven’t downloaded anything. This has just randomly happened.

Hi @TakaraBarns12 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP 14-inch laptop is experiencing a glitch that affects the login screen and overall performance.
Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
Perform a Hard Reboot:
- Press and hold the power button until the laptop turns off completely.
- Wait for about 30 seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on.
Boot into Safe Mode:
- Restart your laptop and immediately start pressing the F8 key repeatedly until you see the Advanced Boot Options menu.
- Select Safe Mode from the list and press Enter.
- If the laptop boots successfully in Safe Mode, you can try running a malware scan or checking for any issues in Device Manager.
Check for Malware:
- Use Windows Defender or another trusted antivirus program to perform a full system scan. This will help identify and remove any malware that might be causing the problem.
Update or Roll Back Drivers:
- In Safe Mode, go to Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting it.
- Check for any driver updates or roll back recent driver updates if you suspect they might be causing the issue.
Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow and press Enter to check for and repair corrupted system files.
- After that, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to repair the Windows image.
Check Disk for Errors:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type chkdsk /f and press Enter. Follow the prompts to schedule a disk check and restart your laptop.
Reset Your PC:
- If none of the above steps work, you might need to reset your laptop. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select Reset this PC.
If the issue persists after these steps, there could be a hardware problem
