Pavilion ab153nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, Braeden here, looking for some big help. I ran into some problems yesterday with my brand new HP Pavilion. I just got this bad boy in August and here it is freaking out but I know in my head there must be a solution. Here is the problem.

Yesterday I got a system thread blue screen and didn't think anything of it. Maybe just too much disk usage as I use a lot of my computer rendering videos and playing games. Then it happened again while I was trying to play Dragon's Dogma and when I looked it up I read that it could be caused by out of date graphics drivers. So sure enough when I ran Driver Booster I had about 8 "exremely old" drivers one of which was the graphics driver. So I was updating the drivers, everything was going fine, I wasn't really paying attention and my screen went black. I thought maybe it was just the graphics driver updating so I let it sit for a while. When it didn't fix itself after about 5 minutes I went ahead and did a restart, I realized this was a huge mistake right away of course (keep in mind I am not some fool when it comes to computers). So I tried to boot the thing back up and sure enough, right after the hp loading screen it just gave me a black screen. Nothing more. I let it sit for about 20 minutes and got nothing. NOW here's where the tricky part comes in, usually you would just run a startup recovery for something like this, however, for whatever reason it would not accept my password that it REQUIRES for startup recovery. So I decided maybe I would try to boot in safe mode and use driver booster to reverse the problem? I thought this would surely work. Nope. It booted up to the windows log in screen just fine in safe mode but I CANNOT log in to my administrator account. I am at a loss at this point. This all happened at about 11:00 P.M. last night and I was too worn out to keep dealing with it so here I am this morning looking for some help from the HP community. Hopefully there is a quick reply!

Of all the so-called third party driver updaters Driver Booster is likely the most innocuous but I never would advise using such an application. It is not malware but is not really necessary and can cause problems. HP Support Assistant does the same thing and will only provide you with HP drivers. For things like video it is not always a good idea to use even the latest component manufacturer driver. I think the combination of Driver Booster and the unwise hard shutdown has left you with an unuseable installation and you are going to have to do a clean Windows 10 install using Microsoft Media Creation Tool.

mThat's what I was hoping I wouldn't have to do, but I knew I would. Thanks for the confirmation. I will be using HP assistant in the future.
