“SYSTEM REQUIRES A REBOOT” does not respond to enter or esc.

Hi,

If the screen says “SYSTEM REQUIRES A REBOOT” and the keyboard does not respond to Enter or Esc, I would first treat it as a system/firmware hang rather than a normal Windows issue.

Please try the following:

  1. Hold the power button for at least 10–15 seconds until the laptop turns off.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter and all external devices.
  3. Perform a power reset:
    • Disconnect AC power.
    • Hold the power button for about 15–30 seconds.
    • Reconnect only the AC adapter.
    • Power on again.

If the same message returns, try accessing HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:

  1. Turn the laptop off.
  2. Power it on and immediately tap Esc repeatedly.
  3. Press F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Run a system test.

If this happened during or after a BIOS update, do not keep forcing restarts repeatedly. Try HP BIOS recovery:

Also test with an external USB keyboard if possible, just to confirm the built-in keyboard is not frozen or failing.

If none of these steps work, please share the exact HP model number and when the message appears: before the HP logo, during BIOS update, or while Windows is loading.
