Hi @Lindsay1967,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're stoked to have you on board!

To help us get started on resolving your issue, could you please share the model name of your device?

Meanwhile, you can try these steps:

1. Disable Edge from Startup

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

Go to the Startup tab.

Look for Microsoft Edge.

Right-click it → select Disable.

2. Change What Closing the Lid Does

Press Win + R, type powercfg.cpl and hit Enter.

On the left, click Choose what closing the lid does.

Under “When I close the lid,” set it to Sleep or Hibernate instead of “Do nothing.”

Save changes.

3. Stop Edge from Restarting Automatically

Open Edge → click Settings (three dots in the top-right).

Go to System and Performance.

Turn off “Startup boost” and “Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.”

After these changes, Edge should no longer open or stay active after you close the lid.

We're looking forward to helping you get back up and running!

Best regards,

I'm an HP Employee.

Thank you.  1,  Edge isn't in the startup list.  2.  I already had "sleep" in the "closing the lid" section.  Didn't work.  3.  There aren't three dots at the top of the program that appears when I turn it on.

Hi @Lindsay1967,

Thanks for your update! Since Edge isn’t appearing in the Startup list and the lid settings are already configured, let’s try a few more steps to stop it from staying active:

1. Check Background Apps Permissions

Press Win + I to open Settings → go to Apps → Apps & features.

Find Microsoft Edge, click the three dots → Advanced options.

Under Background apps permissions, select Never.

2. Disable Edge’s Background Processes via Registry (advanced step)

Press Win + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.

Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\Main

If the key doesn’t exist, you can create it. Then create a DWORD (32-bit) Value named AllowPrelaunch and set it to 0.

This prevents Edge from pre-launching in the background.
(Make sure to back up your registry before making changes.)

3. Use Task Scheduler to Stop Edge at Login

Press Win + S, type Task Scheduler, and open it.

On the left panel, go to Task Scheduler Library → Microsoft → Windows → MicrosoftEdge.

If there’s a task called Edge Update or similar, right-click → Disable.

4. Reset Edge

Open Settings → Apps → Apps & features → Microsoft Edge → Modify → Repair.

This can fix any configuration that keeps it launching automatically.

After trying these steps, close the lid and see if Edge still stays open.

I hope this helps.
