Hi,
First of all, remove the requirement for a power on password as follows - use the code from my previous post where necessary.
Shut down the notebook. Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to access the Start-up menu and then select f10 to enter the Bios menu. Use the arrow keys to highlight the Security tab and hit enter. Use the arrow keys again to highlight power on password and hit enter. Enter the current password ( use the code in my previous post ) and then for the new password, just leave this blank and hit enter - do the same for the confirmation field. Press f10, select to save the new settings and hit enter.
Then shut down the notebook again. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu. Select the Bios option ( f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive.
Run the tests and post back with the results, including details of any error messages.
Regards,
DP-K

Hi,
In that case, if you're running the original Windows 7 starter that you notebook shipped with, try reloading the operating system using your recovery media - you can find a guide for this on the following link.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110#AbT1
If you don't have your recovery media, you can still order a replacement set from the 3rd party reseller on the link below.

If you had upgraded to Windows 10, you can just perform a clean installation as detailed in the guide on the following link. Note: At the activation screen, select 'I don't have a Product key' - Windows will activate automatically once the installation has completed.
