  • Hello I have a 15 inch HP laptop and I accidentally kicked my laptop that was open on top of a coffee table,It happened when I was asleep on the couch.I woke up and seen my laptop lying on the floor,so I quickly got to pick up laptop and to see if there was any damage to the screen and there wasn't.I turn it on and the power stay on and I can hear the laptop running, but the screen doesn't come on and it stayed black.I then hook up the laptop to an external device and my laptop screen came on to the external device and so that was a relief. What do I do next to get my laptop screen to turn on?

Hi @chuckie1288

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It’s good to hear that your laptop still powers on and works with an external display—this suggests the issue is likely with the internal screen, display cable, or backlight. Here are some steps to troubleshoot:

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop and unplug it.
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and turn it on.

Check Display Brightness

  • Some laptops allow brightness adjustments via Fn + F3 or F10 (keys may vary).
  • Try increasing brightness to see if the screen is just dim.

Enter BIOS to Test Display

  • Restart the laptop and repeatedly press F10 (or Esc) to enter BIOS.
  • If the BIOS screen appears, the issue may be with Windows or display drivers.

Reseat the Display Cable (If Comfortable)

  • If the laptop suffered impact, the display cable may have loosened.
  • If you’re comfortable, open the laptop casing and check if the screen connectors are firmly attached.

Update Graphics Drivers

  • Since the external display works, update the graphics drivers via Device Manager.
  • Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics driver, and choose Update driver.

Check for Backlight Issues

  • Shine a flashlight directly onto the laptop screen—if you faintly see an image, the backlight may have failed.
  • This would require screen replacement.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, the screen itself may need replacement. Let me know what happens, and I’ll guide you further!
