HP Spectre x360 - 15-ch011nr
Microsoft Windows 11

A problem started this week where my HP Spectre x360 - 15-ch00nr from early 2018 won't power off. Every time I click "sleep," press my power button, close the screen, or click "shut down," the computer powers down for a few second but then reboots. So I'm left with a computer that won't turn off unless it completely loses battery.

I have reset my battery settings and gone into my sleep settings but haven't found things to change like hybrid sleep mode amongst other settings that were mentioned on chat boards from people who had similar issues . After discovering the problem, I upgraded from Windows 10 two days ago to Windows 11 to see if that would change anything but it did not. Now running Windows 11. I have had the same issue on both operating systems. Please help!

Hi @jwpotts9,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's frustrating to encounter issues with your laptop's power functions. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

1. Update Drivers and Windows:

  • Make sure all your drivers, especially graphics and chipset drivers, are up-to-date.
  • Ensure that your operating system is fully updated. This includes Windows updates and firmware updates.

2. Power Settings:

  • Open the Power & sleep settings and check the power plan settings.
  • Make sure that the "Sleep" settings are configured correctly.
  • Adjust the advanced power settings and ensure that the options related to sleep and shutdown are configured appropriately.

3. BIOS/UEFI Update:

  • Visit HP's official website and check if there are any BIOS/UEFI updates available for your laptop. If there are, consider updating it as it may contain fixes for power-related issues.

4. Check for Malware:

  • Perform a full system scan for malware using your installed antivirus software.

5. System File Checker:

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following command:

sfc /scannow

  • This will check for and attempt to repair corrupted system files.

6. Check for Recently Installed Software:

  • If the issue started after installing new software, consider uninstalling or rolling back the changes to see if it resolves the problem.

7. Hardware Check:

  • Run hardware diagnostics to check for any potential hardware issues. HP usually provides built-in diagnostics tools accessible during the boot process.

8. Restore to a Previous State:

  • If the issue started recently, you can try restoring your system to a previous state using System Restore.

Before making any significant changes, it's a good idea to back up your important data.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Your post did not help resolve my issue. Instead, it was this post from 6/7/2019 from Djelectron on another HP chat board that provided the very simple fix. Please post this on more chat boards or a central part of HP's support site because people are needlessly spending hours, if not months, trying to figure out what's wrong with their constantly rebooting computer when it's as simple as a CMOS reset. I will copy and paste Djelectron's post here:

"I have been dealing with the exact same issue since February 15th, 2019. I have an HP HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl1XX laptop. Today I finally got a fix!!! Read on...

Every single time I shut down, hibernate or sleep my laptop, it goes through whatever process I initiated, then the power light goes out. 4 seconds later, it automatically reboots. I have been on 20+ hours of tech support calls and remote control sessions over the last 4 months with MS and HP engineers to no avail.

The problem started when I upgraded to Win10 build 1809 from 1803 and also updated the HP BIOS on Feb 15th 2019. No other driver or software changes were made at that time - only the windows and BIOS update. Something in either of those updates broke the suspend or shutdown process.

Since then, this happened every single time I have tried to shut down or suspend the PC. The only recourse I had was to press and hold the power button for a hard shutdown.

Finally today I called HP back. The woman I spoke to said that there was nothing else to do except send the laptop back for a $400-600 repair! I was shocked. I asked what they would do, and she said they would likely replace the motherboard. I've seen multiple other posts (including this one) where the motherboard replacement fixed the problem. I asked her to send me to HP Parts so I could get a replacement and do it my self.

When I got to the parts guy, it turns out that he was actually a Spectre technician as well. We talked for a few minutes, he said he would see if he could get me a discount on the part or repair, and while we were waiting for a manager to get back to him, he asked if we had tried a CMOS reset. Nope.

So, we force shut down the laptop by pressing and holding the power button. Once off, I pressed and held Win+V, pressed the power button and released it, waited 5-10 seconds, then released Win+V. A screen came up saying:

The CMOS checksum is invalid. The CMOS will be reset to the default configuration and will be rebooted. Please check your BIOS Setup Options to see if they change.

CMOS Reset (502)

ENTER - Reboot the system

It actually fixed the problem!!! After months and months of frustration - and after speaking to a lot of really smart, good technicians - my man Rohit on the late night shift with Spectre support in India came up with the simple, easy, fast solution.

TLDR:

If your PC restarts every time you try to shut it down, sleep, or hibernate, try the CMOS reset before you spend hundreds of dollars and months of frustration.

  1. Fully shut down by pressing and holding power.
  2. Press and hold Win+V. Do not release.
  3. Press the power button.
  4. Once the power light comes on, wait 5-10 seconds, then release Win+V.
  5. If the screen says your CMOS checksum is invalid, you're one step away from your fix.
  6. Press ENTER
  7. Celebrate!"
