Hello my computer is not turning on. The power light turns on for a few seconds and then will shut off. The charging light is doing the same thing. What is wrong and how do I fix it?

Hi @AD1415

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If your HP computer's power and charging lights are briefly turning on before shutting off, it suggests a potential power supply or hardware issue. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Check the Power Source:

  • Ensure that your power adapter is securely connected to both the computer and a working electrical outlet.
  • Try using a different electrical outlet.

Inspect the Power Adapter:

  • Confirm that the power adapter is not damaged. Check for any visible damage on the cord or adapter.
  • If possible, test the adapter with a different compatible device or use a different adapter with your computer to rule out adapter issues.

Reset the Computer:

  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if it's a laptop with a removable battery).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter (and battery if applicable), and then try turning on the computer again.

Remove Peripheral Devices:

  • Disconnect all external devices (e.g., USB drives, printers, docking stations) to ensure they're not causing the problem.
  • Try to power on the computer with only the power cable connected.

Check for Overheating:

  • Ensure the computer's vents are not blocked, as overheating can cause shutdowns.
  • If any blockage is found, remove it and ensure the computer is placed on a hard, flat surface to allow for proper ventilation.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, there might be more complex hardware problems such as issues with internal components like the motherboard, RAM, or power jack.
