So, this problem only began about a week ago. However, I've had this problem in the past around ten months ago with the same laptop, and it went away by itself around a month later (though I'd like to avoid waiting if possible).

When I shut the lid of my laptop or press the power button, it immediately shuts down. However, in the power settings I have it to go to sleep and lock in all circumstances (whether plugged in or unplugged) when I do either of those actions.

Curiously, this problem actually doesn't occur at night. If I shut my laptop's lid overnight and then open it in the morning, it always just turns off the screen and the hard disk but does not lock; once I open the lid it just immediately resumes my old session. However, if I shut the lid after this (e.g. after one of my classes to move), it just shuts down my laptop.

I've already tried to reset power options as I've browsed a couple other threads, but it didn't seem to work. I'm currently running the system file checker to see if I have any corrupted files, that may be a reason but I highly doubt it.

Any help at all would be very much appreciated, thanks!

Hi! @NishEC, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand your laptop shuts down when you close the lid or press the power button once on your PC.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.

As you mentioned your laptop shuts down when you close the lid or press the power button once on your PC.

Please try few steps recommended below.

1. Go to "Control Panel" and then "Power Options".
2. Click on "Change plan settings", next to the plan you are using.
3. Now click "Change advanced power settings".
4. Scroll down and locate "Power buttons and lid.
5. Click the "plus" to open that and then click "Power button action".
6. Click the blue work/link next to "Setting:" and change "Do nothing", if you want don't want your laptop to be turned off.
7. Now click "Apply" and then finally click "OK".

If the issue still persists try updating Chipset driver and BIOS on your PC and check if it helps.

You update the latest drivers using HP support assistant.

Let me know if this works!

Regarding the string in which member asks how to keep the laptop on when closing the cover... that "fix" (changing setting in power options) worked.  Thanks!

Next question: If I leave laptop in closed (but "on") status for any length of time, will I cause the laptop to overheat or otherwise cause any damage? (FYI, I'd like to use my laptop like a desktop in instances where I'll be at my desk for extended periods. It will be "docked" to a large screen, external keyboard, mouse, etc.) Thanks kindly.
