Elitebook 8770w
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi guys,

My Elitebook 8770w has an issue or 2.  It started to fail to boot a few weeks ago but would eventually. Just the other day it failed to boot but the fan was running flat out plus the caps and num lights remained on or would just flash a few times. Either way l would have to force shut it down.

I think the OS system needs a fresh install which I’m trying to do, unfortunately getting the thing to boot for more than 2sec so l can get into the bios is very hard. If l can get it to bios l can’t change the bios to boot the USB 1st, I’ve noticed there is no USB option in the bios. So how do l do a fresh install when l don’t have the ability to put the USB as 1st boot?

Your thoughts and help please 😀

Hi:

You would need to boot from the notebook's USB 2 port.

You don't necessarily need to change the boot order.

You should be able to tap the ESC key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen, to get the menu of options.

There will be an F9 boot options menu and there should be a list of bootable devices.

If for some reason, the USB flash drive doesn't show up there, I suggest making a bootable DVD instead to reinstall W10.

The media creation tool gives you the option to save an ISO file which you can burn to a DVD, using your DVD burning program's burn ISO option.

Or you can use the Windows tool that I have zipped up and attached below to transfer the ISO file to a DVD.

Well no joy at this point, each time I try to boot the laptop, I just get 1 to 2 seconds of activity then the 'cap locks' and 'num' keys just flash at me 3 times in sequence then the fan kicks in and runs flat out.  Have even tried taking the battery out, holding down the power button for 30secs then release it.  Grab the power cord, hold the power button down and plug the adaptor in.  Again the same things happen, keyboard lights flash then the fan screams its **bleep** off.....becoming a little frustrated now
