OMEN Laptop - 17-cb1175nd

I have a CMOS Checksum problem and not able anymore to get access the BIOS.

I read an earlier answer and suggestion, please see below! When I reboot I got the same problem e.g. not able to come into the BIOS.

Hopefully someone can help me.

In some cases the automatic BIOS recovery fails because of corrupted CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) data. The CMOS stores BIOS settings. Try this procedure to reset the CMOS and recover the BIOS.

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Press and hold the Windows + V keys.

  3. Still pressing those keys, press and hold the Power button on the computer for 2-3 seconds, and then release the Power button, but continue pressing and holding the Windows + V keys until the CMOS Reset screen displays or you hear beeping sounds.

    At the completion of a successful CMOS Reset, a message similar to the one below displays:

     
    Press Enter to restart the computer.

It looks like you’re dealing with a CMOS Checksum error that’s preventing you from accessing the BIOS on your HP OMEN Laptop - 17. The CMOS Checksum error usually indicates that the CMOS battery is failing or that the BIOS settings have become corrupted.

 

The procedure you mentioned is a common troubleshooting step for resetting CMOS and recovering BIOS, but if it’s not working, here are a few additional steps you can try.

 

Remove and Reinsert the CMOS Battery:

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect it from any power sources.
  • Open the back panel of the laptop (this may require a screwdriver).
  • Locate the CMOS battery (it’s usually a small, coin-shaped battery).
  • Remove the battery carefully, wait for about 5-10 minutes, then reinsert it. This can help reset the CMOS settings.
  • Reassemble the laptop and try powering it on again.

Check for BIOS Recovery Options:

  • Some HP laptops have built-in BIOS recovery options. To access these, turn off the laptop, then turn it on and immediately start pressing Esc repeatedly. This might bring up a menu with an option to enter BIOS or recover it.

Use BIOS Recovery Keys:

  • On some HP laptops, pressing Windows + B while turning on the laptop can initiate a BIOS recovery process. Hold the keys until you see the HP logo or a prompt for recovery.

Update/Replace CMOS Battery:

  • If the CMOS battery is dead or failing, replacing it might resolve the issue. Make sure to get a replacement that matches the specifications of the original battery.

Hi Alden,

 

many thanks for your reply and suggestions.

However, unfortunately the problem remains. I have checked the combined main/CMOS battery. It was OK. I have recovered with a flash drive the BIOS. A new BIOS was installed, All without succes. 
After booting, no sound and only a black screen to be seen. No access to the BIOS possible.

Any suggestions how to proceed?

It seems like your HP OMEN Laptop - 17 might have a deeper hardware issue if the BIOS recovery and flashing did not resolve the problem. Here are some steps and suggestions that could help.

 

Hard Reset the Laptop:

  • Disconnect all external devices, and unplug the laptop.
  • Remove the battery if it’s removable (most laptops these days don't have this option).
  • Hold down the power button for about 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Plug the laptop back in, and try turning it on again to see if you can access the BIOS.

BIOS Key/CMOS Reset:

Since the issue involves the CMOS and BIOS access, consider performing a full CMOS reset:

  • CMOS Jumper Reset: On some laptops, there is a CMOS reset jumper on the motherboard that can be shorted to reset the BIOS.
  • Remove the CMOS Battery: If you haven’t already, remove the CMOS battery (small coin-cell battery) from the motherboard, leave it out for about 5-10 minutes, and then replace it. This forces a BIOS reset.

Blind Flashing the BIOS:

It’s possible the BIOS may not have installed correctly. To attempt a blind BIOS flash:

  • Place the correct BIOS file on a FAT32-formatted USB drive.
  • Connect the USB drive to the laptop.
  • Hold down the Windows + B keys and then press the Power button. Keep holding the keys until you hear a beep or see the BIOS flashing process start.
  • If this process works, the BIOS should reinstall.

External Display Test:

The laptop’s built-in display may be malfunctioning. Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV via HDMI or DisplayPort to see if there’s any output. If the external monitor shows an image, the issue might be with the internal display.

Check for a Beep Code:

If there is no display, listen for beep codes when you power on the laptop. These beeps can indicate specific hardware problems (e.g., RAM, graphics card, motherboard). Check the pattern and refer to your laptop's manual for decoding the beep codes.

Check the RAM and Reseat:

Faulty RAM could also prevent BIOS access. Try reseating the RAM sticks or swapping them if you have more than one. If possible, try starting the laptop with just one stick of RAM, then swap to another stick if the problem persists.

Remove Non-Essential Hardware:

Disconnect non-essential components like SSDs, HDDs, and additional RAM sticks. Try to boot with only the CPU and RAM installed to see if the laptop will boot or give a POST (Power-On Self-Test) error.
