Before all this happened, I was trying to gets windows 7 logon screen.. But I already did this before using a program that also fiddles with the logon screen. Now both of them fiddle with the logon screen and only one shows. (Hope you understand) When I try to get back to the normal logon screen, just a black screen with mouse. Keyboard presses don’t work as far as I know. I’ve searched this up a bunch and it seems nobody knows or cares, So I’m hoping somebody knows how to deal with this.
Hard resets didn’t work
safe Mode (all variants) didn’t work
cant access regular recovery mode

Hi @Spence13,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it must be to face a black screen with just a mouse cursor after modifying the Windows logon screen, especially when recovery options and Safe Mode aren't working. You're not alone in this, and I’m here to help you with the right steps to try and get the system back.
🛠️ Here's what you can try to recover your system:
Step 1: Try Low-Resolution Mode
Sometimes, the logon screen modifications can mess with display settings. Try booting into low-resolution video mode:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Turn it back on and immediately press F8 repeatedly (even though Safe Mode doesn’t work, this might still bring up the Startup Settings).
- If you see options, choose Enable low-resolution video (640x480).
Step 2: Use HP’s Built-in Recovery (F11)
Even if regular recovery isn’t accessible, HP laptops often have a recovery partition:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press F11 repeatedly.
- If the HP Recovery Manager opens, choose System Recovery or Reset this PC.
If F11 doesn’t work, move to the next step.
Step 3: Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool
If your recovery partition is corrupted or inaccessible, HP provides a tool to create a recovery USB:
- Visit: support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4511095-4511141-16
- Download the tool on another working PC.
- Use it to create a recovery drive on a 32 GB USB for your HP Laptop 17-cn0xxx.
- Boot from the USB and follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall Windows.
Step 4: External Monitor Test
If the screen is black but the system is running, try connecting to an external monitor to rule out display issues:
- Connect via HDMI or USB-C.
- Restart the laptop and check if the external monitor shows anything.

I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
