Hi. I’ve had a HP laptop working well for a couple of years now and it was updated to windows 10some time ago without issue. However, just recently I can’t get past the windows login screen at boot up. The picture appears but when you press a key or mouse the password prompt doesn’t appear. After several seconds it returns to the landscape picture. I’ve tried booting in safe mode which works fine, then returning to the normal boot up but the same thing happens. I’ve created an additional user but can’t actually get to a prompt to login with that anyway. I’ve tried a roll back but again faced with same problem. I’ve removed the need for a login in password in an attempt to ‘skip’ the password prompt but again nothing happens and it sits at where the password prompt should be. In fact I’ve tried everything I can find on the various forums. Any ideas? If I get to safe mode ok, what should I change in an attempt to get through or back to a login prompt?

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
I'll be glad to help you 🙂
As I understand the device doesn't allow you to login after the logon screen,
No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:
- Have you attempted to use other related posts to resolve this issue?
- Did you get a black screen after entering the password or is that it's stuck at the landscape picture after the login password is entered?
While you respond to that, here's what we need to begin with, to resolve this issue:
- Go back to safe-mode, In the run box type msconfig.
- Go to Services tab and disable App Readiness. (uncheck all except App Readiness and then tap disable button)
- More details, by one of our awesome HP Experts: https://hp.care/2llLN1F
Keep me posted,
For I (Or a trusted colleague) shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,
And your device is up and running again,
that said, If the information I've provided was helpful,
give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Well I tried the Diablo g of app readiness and it’s not changed a be honest I’ve tried everything I can find. The situation is this:
i boot up up the machine, which gets to the windows screen with a nice backdrop, and the date in the bottom left hand corner. Normally when pressing a key the admin username would appear, together with a password prompt. However, at the minute pressing the keyboard causes the screen to zoom a little but there is no password prompt or username. I’ve tried putting the password in anyway but nothing happens. After a few seconds the screen reverts back to the nice background, time and date. I can’t get past this point unless I’m in safe mode.
But now, after several minutes the password prompt has appeared, so I’m in... but this ability to log in is intermittent.
When I do get I. The problem is this...
I now have no WiFi, so no internet access.. what is going on? How can I get access back? It doesn’t look like my WiFi controller is working, or activated. Plugging a network cable in does nothing. There’s no light on the socket.. running diagnostics says “ the diagnostic service policy is not running” I now have no network connections... arghhhhh.....
this is is very frustrating and has taken over two days now.

And on restarting I’m back to where I started... back to no password prompt and no means of logging in to my account... pressing a key fades the screen slightly as if it’s waiting for a password but there’s no prompt.. after 5 mins no password prompt still, and it keeps returning to the date/time screen... 😡

Thank you for responding,
It's great to have you back 😉
I understand you don't have internet access at the moment apart from the other login issues, although we don't really need internet for the steps I had recommended, that said, I suggest you hold the shift key and then, left-click on the restart button at the bottom right of your screen, when done you could use the advanced boot options & attempt a system restore.
If you don't have a restore point, you could attempt a push button reset to resolve the issue.

What’s a ‘push button reset’? Do I lose all my files? Or will it keep them but lose their locations? I don’t have a valid restore point to use...
is is there anyway I can use the HP support assistant to obtain the current drivers for my machine? Maybe I’m missing the appropriate ones for my network/WiFi card?

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉
I appreciate your time and efforts,
Microsoft claims that there wouldn't be a data loss, however, it's recommended that you get into safemode and create a backup of all important data/files before attempting a push button reset and to answer your query about what that is, use this link: https://hp.care/2JSYfEG;(for instructions).
If the issue persists, you may need to perform a system recovery to resolve this issue, by reverting the device to factory defaults, use this link for instructions: https://hp.care/2sZtgO9
