HP ENVY Laptop PC 17t-cg100 CTO

System idle for over a year.  No charging light when plugged in, no responses.  Did battery go bad?  Is charger defective?  Not sure what to check without being able to turn it on.

Hi @pbABQ13

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your laptop may have a power issue. When a device has been idle for an extended time, both the battery and charger could potentially be culprits. Here are some steps to troubleshoot:

Check the Charger:

  • Verify that the charger is functioning by testing it with another compatible device (if possible).
  • Inspect the charging cable and adapter for any visible damage.
  • Ensure the wall socket is working by plugging in a different device.

Attempt a Hard Reset:

  • Unplug the charger, then hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds. This clears residual charge from the system.

Remove and Reseat the Battery:

  • If the battery is removable, detach it from the laptop and reinsert it securely. Then try turning it on with and without the charger connected.

Inspect for Indicator Lights:

  • Check for small LED indicators near the charging port or power button; they might flicker when attempting to charge.

Clean the Ports:

  • Use a soft brush or compressed air to clean the charging port, ensuring there’s no dust or debris blocking contact.
